With Citation 9, it is no longer necessary to open the Short List view and highlight the work you want to cite.

The Cite Current Record Button on the Main Edit window lets you enter a Cite Key for the current record:

The new QuickSearch feature makes it simple to cite a record: just do a Quick Search for a term you recall from the record you want to cite. When Citation jumps to that record, click the new Cite Button.
